Industry Survey on BBS - Starting the Process
Industry Survey Results (cont....). This page reports on how respondents started their Behavioral Safety process.
Just over half the respondents started their Behavioral Safety process without professional advice. This shows that people are willing to try and help themselves, though it is no guarantee of success
Of the almost 49 percent who did use professional help, BST, Du Pont and B-Safe were the top three providers, each with their own unique perspective on Behavioral Safety. Both BST and Du Pont use an observation card system designed to cover all aspects of safety, training as many people to be observers as possible. The difference between them is that BST tends to use a 'bottom-up' approach with employee observers, whereas Du Pont tends to use a 'top-down' approach using managers as observers. B-Safe is entirely different as it uses observation checklists targeted at specific job tasks, trains and rotates one observer per workgroup every six months or so, and uses multiple feedback channels. B-Safe also includes both employees and managers in the entire process in an attempt to create a 'safety partnership' founded on trust and respect.
Of those respondents who developed their own process, most employed someone who already had significant Behavioral Safety experience. Others were shown by the Corporate Safety dept, where 'in-house' expertise was available. A few started by reading the literature on Behavioral Safety, while a smaller number visited another site implementing Behavioral Safety and 'copied' the process.
